Who we are ?

Flourish Creative Arts Therapy is where you will find Emily Doddrell, a Masters qualified Creative Arts Therapist with a background in supporting children, adolescents and families. We are a new and small Ballarat art therapy practice. Emily brings a strengths-based approach to her work, acknowledging the values, strengths and uniqueness of the people she works with. An interest in creativity led Emily to visual art and a Masters in Therapeutic Arts Practice (Art Therapy). Emily is a professional member of ANZACATA.

Emily is passionate about creating opportunities for individuals to experience how engaging Creative Arts Therapy can enhance self- awareness, wellbeing, and relationships with others.

Emily is in her happy place when surrounded by paints, scraps of paper and her art journals.

What happens in an art therapy session

You may be wondering what happens in an art therapy session? Of course it will be different for each person, but typically in a session your art therapist will meet with you first, and get to know you, and find out what you want to explore in your sessions.

Then you will be guided through different creative, arts-based processes in a safe and supported way. Your art therapist will support you to engage with the materials you choose which may be paints, or markers, clay or material, and throughout the session may offer prompts and suggestions. There will be time to talk as you are making, or not talk if that is your preference.

Creative Arts Therapists are mental health professionals who use art, media and the creative process (drawing, writing, sculpting, drama, clay, sand, dance and movement) to facilitate the exploration of feelings, improve self-awareness and reduce anxiety for clients. Creative processes can be a way for clients to explore and express feelings that may be hard to put into words and to find new pathways to healing. A Creative Arts Therapy session is therefore quite different to an art class or lesson.
